Some of the earthquake bolt face plates are decorative. They contain emblems, strange creature-like faces, and religious symbolism. The earthquake bolts are still operable in the sense that if a building starts to lean or sag, the bolt tension through the building can be adjusted to re-straighten it. The earthquake bolt technology is not unique to the Americas as it has been applied in western European countries for a couple of centuries prior to the 1800s.
